Holiday Greeting Cards…We all get them and most of us send
them, but have you ever wondered why the tradition of sending Christmas cards
is so popular? When did this custom
begin? You may be interested to know
that the first Christmas card was privately commissioned in London by an
English businessman in 1843. Writing
letters at the holidays had been popular before, but took time. Those diligent in sending correspondence to
all their friends and family found letter writing a daunting task. The Christmas card allowed for easily
sending greetings to everyone on their list. Another attractive feature was
that in London 1843, postage was only a penny per card. Christmas cards became an affordable and
convenient way to send greetings during a busy holiday season. It is no wonder that Christmas cards found a
life of their own. By 1851 these merry
greetings had found their way into the U.S. and were mass produced in England
and imported to America. For 30 years
Yuletide greetings were shipped to the U.S. from over seas. Then in 1875 an
immigrant from Germany opened his own lithographic shop in America and began
producing the first American Christmas card.
Since their
inception the Christmas card has taken many forms and shapes. The styles and sentiments have changed and
been translated in to many languages. You can find a variety of styles from humorous to traditional featuring images
ranging from Santa to the Nativity. There is a holiday card for every personality. With the boom of the technology age it is now possible to
commission your own Christmas cards online and have them shipped to you just
